Mechanical BIM: HVAC System Data for Energy Analysis in Revit

Revit's mechanical systems carry the data needed for energy analysis: zone assignments, HVAC system types, airflow rates, setpoint temperatures, and occupancy schedules. When this data is maintained in the BIM model, energy analysis tools can extract it automatically rather than requiring manual re-entry.

Why This Matters

Energy analysis models that are built separately from the BIM model diverge as the design changes. A BIM model that contains energy-relevant parameters allows the energy analysis to be refreshed when the design changes, rather than rebuilt from scratch.

Practical Guidance

Energy Settings in Revit: Configure Energy Settings (building type, location, construction sets) before running Revit's built-in energy analysis. These settings affect the gbXML export that feeds energy analysis tools. Incorrect building type or construction assumptions produce misleading energy estimates.

Mechanical Zone Assignment: Assign rooms to mechanical HVAC zones in Revit. Zone assignments drive zone-based load calculations and HVAC sizing. Rooms that are not assigned to zones are excluded from zone-based energy analysis.

gbXML Export: Revit exports gbXML (Green Building XML) for energy analysis tools (EnergyPlus, IES VE, eQUEST). The gbXML export captures room geometry, construction properties, window performance, and zone assignments. Validate the gbXML file in the energy analysis tool before running simulations.

As-Designed vs As-Built Energy: The energy model should be updated with as-built construction data (actual U-values, glazing areas, equipment efficiencies) before issuing for building performance certification. As-designed energy models with design assumptions that do not reflect actual construction produce certificates that do not represent building performance.

Checklist

  • Configure Energy Settings before first gbXML export
  • Assign all rooms to mechanical HVAC zones
  • Validate gbXML in energy analysis tool before running simulations
  • Update energy model with as-built construction data before performance certification

LUA BIM LABS Insight

BIM energy analysis is a data flow exercise — the quality of the energy model output is determined by the completeness of the zone and construction data in Revit.
