BIM for Construction Site Safety: Using Models from All Disciplines

Construction site safety planning benefits from BIM models because hazards are spatial — they occur at specific locations, during specific construction activities, where specific workers are present. BIM from all disciplines combined with the programme enables a spatial, time-based hazard review that 2D methods cannot provide.

Why This Matters

Falls, struck-by incidents, and engulfment hazards are frequently associated with locations where multiple disciplines' activities overlap — a roof edge without protection where structural, MEP, and architectural trades work simultaneously. The overlapping hazard is visible in 4D BIM but invisible in individual discipline safety reviews.

Practical Guidance

Temporary Works BIM: Model scaffold, formwork, temporary edge protection, and crane positions in the coordination model as temporary elements with TimeLiner assignments. This allows review of temporary works conflicts with permanent building elements and between temporary works systems.

MEP Hazard Zones: Model high-voltage equipment exclusion zones, cryogenic pipe routes, and pressurised system test areas as BIM volumes. Use Navisworks search sets to identify workers' activities that overlap with these hazard zones during the 4D simulation.

Structural Construction Sequence: Review the structural construction sequence for stability risks — partially constructed frames, temporary propping requirements, sequence-dependent cantilever stability. These risks are visible in 4D BIM but require structural engineer input for accurate assessment.

Pre-Construction Safety Pack: Export a safety pack from the 4D BIM model: viewpoint screenshots of key hazard zones, TimeLiner clips of high-risk activities, and a hazard register linked to model locations. Distribute this to all site supervisors before site mobilisation.

Checklist

  • Model temporary works with TimeLiner assignments before site mobilisation
  • Define high-hazard exclusion zones as BIM volumes in the coordination model
  • Review structural construction sequence in 4D with structural engineer present
  • Export spatial hazard register from BIM for pre-mobilisation safety briefing

LUA BIM LABS Insight

BIM-based safety review finds spatial hazards that programme and method statement reviews miss — it is most valuable when done before site mobilisation, not after the first incident.
