MEP IFC exports from Revit require careful configuration to produce files where ducts, pipes, cable trays, and equipment are classified correctly and carry the system data that structural, architectural, and FM teams need. Default Revit IFC export settings consistently mis-classify MEP elements.
Why This Matters
MEP IFC files used for coordination must have correctly classified elements for Navisworks clash rules to apply discipline-specific tolerances. MEP IFC files for FM handover must have system property sets for equipment maintenance scheduling. Both uses require deliberate export configuration.
Practical Guidance
Duct and Pipe Classification: Revit ducts export to IfcDuctSegment, duct fittings to IfcDuctFitting, pipes to IfcPipeSegment, and pipe fittings to IfcPipeFitting in correctly configured IFC4 exports. IFC2x3 exports frequently produce IfcFlowSegment and IfcFlowFitting instead, which are less specific and affect clash rule filtering.
Equipment Classification: HVAC equipment (AHUs, FCUs, chillers) maps to IfcAirHandlingUnit, IfcFanCoilUnit. Electrical panels map to IfcElectricDistributionBoard. Lighting fixtures map to IfcLightFixture. Custom mapping is required for proprietary equipment families that do not auto-map.
System Property Sets: Include system property sets for MEP elements: Pset_DuctSegmentTypeCommon (nominal width, nominal height, duct area), Pset_PipeSegmentTypeCommon (nominal diameter, length), Pset_SpaceHVACDesign (cooling load, heating load). These are required for FM system import.
File Size Management: MEP IFC files are often the largest in a federated model due to the volume of duct and pipe segments. Use LOD filtering to exclude insulation geometry and accessory families from coordination IFC exports — include them only in FM handover IFC.
Checklist
- Configure IFC export to use IFC4 with correct MEP element class mappings
- Include system property sets for FM handover IFC configuration
- Validate duct, pipe, and equipment classification in IFC viewer before distribution
- Create separate export configurations for coordination IFC and FM handover IFC
