BIM for Structural Connections: Modeling and Coordination in Revit

Structural connections — bolted end plates, welded moment connections, base plates, and shear tabs — are the interface between structural design intent and fabrication reality. Modeling connections in the BIM model enables dimensional coordination with facades, MEP penetrations, and architectural finishes.

Why This Matters

Structural connection dimensions affect architectural and MEP coordination in ways that cannot be detected without connection BIM: a moment connection end plate that projects 60mm beyond the column face into an area reserved for a facade fixing, or a base plate that conflicts with a drainage sleeve.

Practical Guidance

Connection LOD in Design Model: The structural design Revit model typically delivers LOD 300: correct member sizes and positions but no connection detail. Add simplified connection geometry (bolted end plate extents, base plate footprints) at LOD 300 to enable dimensional coordination with other disciplines.

Connection Zones: Model connection clear zones — areas around beam-column connections where MEP penetrations and architectural finishes cannot be located — as Revit volume elements. Include these in the coordination model so MEP and architectural teams can design around them.

Base Plate Coordination: Column base plates affect floor finishes, drainage falls, and equipment plinths at ground floor. Coordinate base plate extents and holding-down bolt positions with architectural, MEP, and civil models before foundation concrete is poured.

Tekla Integration: Steel connection detailing in Tekla Structures produces LOD 400 connection geometry. Import Tekla IFC connection models into the federated coordination model to check that detailed connections are within the space reserved for them in the design model.
