IFC for Structural BIM: What Contractors and Fabricators Need

Structural IFC files are used by civil engineers for site coordination, by MEP teams for clash detection, and by steel and concrete fabricators for shop drawing and fabrication data. Each user group needs different information from the same file.

Why This Matters

A structural IFC file issued for coordination purposes may strip out the property sets that fabricators need. An IFC issued for fabrication may include detail that makes coordination file sizes unworkable. Understanding downstream use drives the correct export configuration.

Practical Guidance

For Coordination (LOD 300): Structural coordination IFC needs accurate element positions, dimensions, and material classification. Property sets for fire rating and load-bearing status are sufficient. Analytical model data is not needed and should be excluded to reduce file size.

For Steel Fabrication (LOD 400): Steel fabricators need connection geometry, bolt patterns, weld positions, and profile dimensions. This level of detail is typically produced in a specialist steel detailing tool (Tekla, Advance Steel) and exported as IFC separately from the design Revit model.

For Concrete Fabrication (LOD 400): Precast concrete fabricators need panel dimensions, connection insert positions, and reinforcement layout. Revit precast tools (or specialist software) produce this IFC. Confirm which party is responsible for LOD 400 precast IFC in the BIM Execution Plan.

IfcElement Classification: Structural columns must export as IfcColumn, beams as IfcBeam, slabs as IfcSlab. Incorrect classification causes fabricators to misidentify element types and coordination software to apply wrong clash rules.

Checklist

  • Define separate IFC export configurations for coordination and fabrication
  • Verify IfcColumn, IfcBeam, IfcSlab classification in viewer before issue
  • Confirm which party is responsible for LOD 400 fabrication IFC in BEP
  • Include required property sets for downstream user in export configuration

One Revit model does not produce one IFC — configure a separate export setup for each downstream user group.
