Structural analysis software and Revit are not naturally interoperable. The link between BIM geometry and structural calculation requires careful configuration to avoid recreating the analysis model from scratch every time the design changes.
Why This Matters
When the Revit physical model and the structural analysis model become disconnected — which happens on most projects without a managed workflow — structural calculations may not reflect the latest design geometry. This creates a coordination and safety risk that is difficult to detect from model review alone.
Practical Guidance
Analytical Model Quality: The Revit analytical model must have aligned nodes at beam-column connections. Misaligned analytical nodes produce invalid analysis results even when the physical model looks correct. Use the Analytical Model Consistency Check tool before each analysis export.
ETABS and SAP2000 Export: Revit exports to ETABS and SAP2000 via the CsiXRevit and Revit-to-SAP links. Element mapping, material properties, and support conditions must be verified in the analysis software after import — do not assume transfer was complete.
Round-Trip Updates: When analysis results require geometry changes (member size increases, connection redesign), update the Revit physical model from the analysis software output rather than manually in Revit. This maintains traceability between analysis and BIM.
Documentation: Record which Revit model revision was used for each analysis run. If the BIM model changes significantly, reanalysis may be required. This traceability is required for structural peer review and regulatory submission on many project types.
Checklist
- Run Analytical Model Consistency Check before every analysis export
- Verify material properties and support conditions in analysis software after import
- Record Revit revision number used for each analysis run
- Update Revit physical model from analysis output for member size changes
