Revit Family Best Practices for Coordination Quality

Revit family quality determines coordination model quality. Families with incorrect geometry, missing connectors, or absent shared parameters produce coordination failures that are difficult to trace back to their root cause. Systematic family quality management prevents these failures.

Why This Matters

A mechanical equipment family that is 200mm larger than the specified equipment produces false coordination clearances. An electrical panel family without correct working clearance geometry produces approved models that fail inspection when the panel is installed. Family quality is coordination quality.

Practical Guidance

Geometry Accuracy: Family geometry must reflect the actual specified equipment dimensions, not a generic approximation. For coordination-critical equipment (AHUs, chillers, transformer bays), verify family dimensions against manufacturer data sheets before placing in the coordination model.

Connector Configuration: Revit MEP connectors control system connectivity, flow direction, and schedule reporting. Incorrectly configured connectors (wrong connector type, wrong flow direction) produce incorrect system calculations and connectivity. Check connectors in a test system before deploying the family to the project.

Shared Parameters: All schedule-required data must be in shared parameters, not instance parameters or family parameters. Shared parameters appear in Revit schedules, IFC property sets, and can be used in Dynamo automation. Instance and family parameters do not reliably transfer to IFC.

Maintenance Clearance Geometry: Include maintenance clearance volumes as void geometry or reference planes in equipment families. Maintenance clearances for equipment access, filter replacement, and valve operation must be visible in the coordination model as distinct geometry.

Checklist

  • Verify family dimensions against manufacturer data sheets for coordination-critical equipment
  • Test MEP connector configuration in a sample system before project deployment
  • Use shared parameters for all schedule and IFC data requirements
  • Include maintenance clearance geometry in equipment families
