Revit to Rhino and Grasshopper: BIM and Parametric Design Integration

Complex architectural geometry — parametric facades, organic roof structures, computational design outcomes — is typically developed in Rhino and Grasshopper before being transferred to Revit for BIM coordination. Managing this design-to-BIM transfer without geometry loss or coordination errors requires a systematic workflow.

Why This Matters

Computational design tools produce geometry that Revit cannot natively model: non-planar surfaces, ruled surfaces, and algorithmically generated patterns. Without a reliable transfer workflow, complex geometry either loses accuracy in Revit or exists only in Rhino, creating a split between the design model and the coordination model.

Practical Guidance

Rhino.Inside.Revit: Rhino.Inside.Revit is an Autodesk and McNeel plugin that runs Rhinoceros and Grasshopper inside the Revit process. Grasshopper definitions can create, modify, and query Revit elements directly, enabling parametric control of Revit geometry from Grasshopper scripts.

Geometry Transfer LOD: Parametric design geometry transferred to Revit for coordination should be at LOD 200-300. Full parametric resolution at LOD 400 is not required for coordination purposes and produces unnecessarily large, slow Revit models.

Reference Geometry: When full transfer is not practical, import simplified Rhino geometry as Revit in-place mass or generic model families as reference geometry. Other disciplines can coordinate against the reference geometry even without a full BIM element structure.

Design Change Propagation: When the Grasshopper definition changes (adjusting facade panel layout, modifying roof curvature), the Revit model update must be managed carefully. Document which Revit elements are Grasshopper-driven and establish a change protocol to prevent coordination surprises from unannounced geometry updates.
