Structural Revit models serve multiple downstream uses: IFC coordination with architectural and MEP teams, structural analysis software export, fabrication shop drawings, and FM handover. Setting up the model correctly from the start serves all these uses without rework.
Why This Matters
Structural models set up without IFC export in mind produce files where columns export as IfcBeam, slabs as generic IfcBuildingElementProxy, and connections are missing entirely. Fixing these classification errors after model completion is time-consuming and error-prone.
Practical Guidance
Element Category Mapping: Use correct Revit structural categories: Structural Columns, Structural Framing, Structural Floors, Structural Foundations. These map directly to IFC structural classes and drive correct clash detection behaviour in Navisworks.
Analytical Model: Maintain the analytical model in sync with the physical model. When structural engineers need to export to analysis software (ETABS, SAP2000), a clean analytical model saves hours of manual correction in the analysis tool.
Shared Parameters: Add structural-specific shared parameters: Material Grade, Fire Rating, Load-Bearing Status. These are required for IFC property sets and FM handover documentation.
Grid and Level Reference: All structural elements must be placed relative to architectural levels and grids. Never create structural-only levels that duplicate architectural levels with different names or elevations.
Checklist
- Use correct Revit structural categories for all elements
- Add fire rating and material grade as shared parameters
- Keep analytical model synchronised with physical model
- Confirm IFC export class mapping with coordination team before first issue
