BIM Field Verification Workflow: From Model Assumption to Site Evidence

BIM field verification connects model assumptions with site evidence. It checks whether installed work matches the coordinated model, whether design assumptions remain valid, and whether as-built data is captured before information is lost behind ceilings, walls, or backfill.

Why This Matters

Models drift from reality when field changes are not recorded. A small unrecorded route change can later affect maintenance access, firestopping, commissioning, and future renovation planning.

Practical Guidance

Define Verification Points: Identify which items need field verification: sleeves, underground utilities, major plant, valves, dampers, access panels, risers, equipment tags, and firestopping locations.

Use Evidence Types: Evidence can include photos, laser scans, survey points, redline drawings, commissioning records, and signed inspection checklists. Define which evidence is acceptable for each item.

Close the Loop: Verification is not complete until the BIM model, issue log, and handover record are updated. A photo stored in a chat room is not a controlled as-built record.

Prioritise Hidden Work: Work that becomes inaccessible should be verified first. Underground utilities, ceiling void services, and shaft penetrations need evidence before closure.

Checklist

  • List field verification items before construction starts
  • Define acceptable evidence type for each item
  • Update BIM and handover records after verification
  • Verify hidden work before it is covered

A field verification workflow protects the model from becoming fiction. The model stays valuable when site evidence returns to the data environment.
