IFC Export from Revit Architecture: What Structural and MEP Need

Exporting IFC from a Revit architectural model is not a single-click operation. Structural engineers need accurate geometry and load-bearing element classifications. MEP teams need correct room and space data. Without proper export configuration, both receive unreliable files.

Why This Matters

IFC is the primary format for OpenBIM coordination and regulatory submission. An incorrectly configured export wastes review time, triggers resubmission cycles, and can invalidate permit applications in jurisdictions that require IFC compliance.

Practical Guidance

IFC Export Settings: Use the IFC Export Setup dialog to map Revit categories to IFC classes. Walls must export as IfcWall, slabs as IfcSlab, columns as IfcColumn. Custom mappings are saved as named configurations that can be shared across the project team.

Spaces for MEP: MEP engineers need IfcSpace elements for zone-based system design. Enable Rooms and Spaces export in the IFC settings. Confirm that room boundaries are closed and room names match the agreed room schedule.

Property Sets: Add project-required property sets to the export configuration. Common requirements include fire rating, construction material, and phase status. These cannot be recovered from geometry alone after export.

Coordinate Reference: Use Shared Coordinates for IFC export origin. All disciplines must export from the same survey point to ensure models align in coordination software without manual repositioning.

Checklist

  • Save IFC export configuration as a named setup file
  • Confirm shared coordinate origin with all disciplines before first IFC issue
  • Validate IFC file in a viewer before distribution
  • Check IfcSpace count matches architectural room schedule

An IFC file is only as good as the export configuration behind it — invest in the setup once and reuse it for every submission.
