A Revit architectural template is not just a starting file — it is the coordination foundation that structural and MEP teams depend on for levels, grids, shared parameters, and view standards. A poorly configured template causes rework across every discipline.
Why This Matters
When the architectural template uses inconsistent level naming, grid numbering, or shared coordinate systems, every linked model inherits those errors. Fixing template issues mid-project is expensive and disruptive.
Practical Guidance
Levels and Grids: Define levels with consistent naming conventions (e.g. B2F, B1F, 1F, 2F) from the start. Grid bubbles must be positioned to avoid overlap in standard plan views. These become reference elements for all disciplines.
Shared Parameters: Add shared parameters for Room Number, Room Name, and Occupancy to the template. MEP and structural teams use these for system zoning and area calculations.
View Templates: Create view templates for Architectural Floor Plan, Reflected Ceiling Plan, Section, and Coordination views. Lock visibility settings so discipline-specific elements do not bleed into shared views.
Project Browser Organisation: Organise the Project Browser by Discipline and then Level. This prevents a 200-view project browser from becoming unnavigable when structural and MEP files are linked.
Checklist
- Confirm level naming with structural before template distribution
- Add shared parameters from the project BIM Execution Plan
- Create at least one coordination view template
- Test template with a linked structural model before issuing
