Door and window schedules in Revit are among the most frequently referenced construction documents. Their accuracy depends on complete and consistent family parameter assignment, correct type naming, and room boundary integrity. Errors in these schedules are discovered by contractors at the worst possible time — during procurement.
Why This Matters
A door schedule with wrong fire ratings or incorrect frame sizes causes procurement errors. A window schedule with missing performance specifications triggers clarification RFIs. BIM-sourced schedules eliminate these errors only if the model data is correct.
Practical Guidance
Door Family Setup: Door families must contain all parameters required in the schedule: fire rating, acoustic rating, frame material, hardware set, finish specification, and opening direction. Ensure shared parameters (not family parameters) are used for values that appear in multiple family categories.
Window Performance Data: Window schedules for permitting typically require U-value, SHGC, visible light transmittance, and acoustic rating. These parameters must be in the window families as shared parameters before the window schedule can include them.
Room Boundary Integrity: Door schedules that show room-to-room relationships (e.g. 'from Room 101 to Corridor') depend on correct room boundary configuration. Doors at room boundaries must have correct To Room and From Room assignments. Check room boundary integrity before producing final schedules.
Schedule Format for Submission: Configure schedule appearance (column widths, header formatting, sorting, subtotalling by level) in Revit schedule properties. A correctly formatted BIM schedule submitted as a drawing sheet is a professional deliverable — not an exported Excel file with manual formatting.
